Czech Skeptics Club SISYFOS announces 2001 Congress to be held in Prague from 7 - 9 September 2001 18 July 2000 -- A comparison between belief in the paranormal in post-communist countries in Eastern Europe and western countries, as well as Alternative Medicine will be the main topics of the 2001 European Skeptics Congress in Prague. Post-communist countries have seen a rapid growth in paranormal beliefs and an increase in the activities of people and groups promoting claims not rooted in critical thinking. The conference will analyse the specific situation in Eastern Europe and the efforts taken by proponents and skeptics. Talks on alternative medicine will focus on the risk posed to the population in general, especially when alternative medicine is coupled with the rejection of evidence-based, scientific medicine. Special attention will be given to how bodies of the European Union approach the problem, considering that pressure groups attempt to use the EU for the promotion of non-scientific medical pratices, such as Homeopathy and Anthroposophic medicine. Interested parties and the media should contact ICARIS Ltd., "10 ESC 2001", Nám. Dr. Holého 8, 180 00 Praha, Czech Republic, Fax: +420 2 684 08 17.
