Facilitated Communication shown again not to work PDF Print E-mail

The Belgian Skeptics organisation SKEPP tested the much publicised claims that the Belgian coma patient Rob Houbens was able to communicate using the controversial facilitated communication technique. In short, evidence points to the facilitator, not Rob Houbens, being responsible for any meaningful typed sentences. While meaningful answers to questions were typed with Rob Houben's eyes closed, only gibberish resulted if the eyes of the facilitator were shielded. The Belgian Skeptics were rightly concerned that, especially if Mr Houben has some limited consciousness, the procedures imposed on him must be frustrating, especially "to hear all the bogus messages being produced in his name, without any possibility to protest".

Facilitated Communication has been tested several times and has been shown to not work and that it is based on wishful thinking. Critical reviews have been published in several magazines, such as the article by Gina Green in the Skeptic and the German Skeptiker. A more extensive news report on the current controversy may be found here on the SKEPP web pages.
