Well-known British UFO investigator passes away

Nick Pope, the United Kingdom’s most recognisable voice on UFOs and unexplained aerial phenomena, died on 6 April 2026, aged 60.

He rose to public prominence after serving in the British Ministry of Defence in the 1990s, where he ran an office popularly known as Britain’s “UFO Desk”. In this role, he investigated hundreds of reports each year, assessing their potential implications for national security and aviation safety. This work placed him at the centre of some of the country’s most enduring mysteries, including the Rendlesham Forest incident of 1980 (sometimes known as the ‘British Roswell incident’), an event which he later admitted still troubled him decades later.

Following his departure from government service, Pope became a respected and reassuring media figure, helping the public to distinguish between speculation and evidence. Although bound by the Official Secrets Act, he provided valuable insights into the formerly classified Ministry of Defence files, emphasising that most sightings had conventional explanations, while acknowledging that a small percentage remained genuinely unexplained.

Nick Pope leaves behind a legacy of curiosity, clarity and a lifelong dedication to investigating the unknown. His work helped shape the modern British conversation about UFOs, and his voice will be missed.
